Dynamic WordArt in Excel with Bar in Bar Chart

Info-chart that shows % completion (progress bar)

Excel WordArt with Formula and Excel bar in bar charts to show progress

Let’s get creative with Excel!

In this tutorial we’re going to combine Word Art together with Excel charts to create an impressive progress bar.

This progress bar is a part of the % sign of our Word Art. The result is the icon for this blog post.

The thing with Word Art is that you can’t conditionally format it without using some VBA code. If you’d like to avoid macros, you can still get creative and combine a mini bar chart with the % sign to get the progress bar.

This will be an impressive visualization for your project progress presentations or for your Excel Dashboards and interactive reports.

We specifically cover two topics here:

  • How to have dynamic word art that is controlled with a formula
  • How to create bar-in-bar Excel charts

…and as a bonus we put them together to create an info-chart.

    Very nice “trick” !

Would there be a way to conditionally format the “percentage-bar” with different colours?
    Eg.
    0-24,99% = Red
    25-74,99% = Amber/Yellow
    75%-99,99% = Green
    and 100% = Blue
Or whatever your companys favourite reporting-scheme is using – different “breaks”, diffrent colours etc.

Yes you can. The trick is to add four series for each color. You need to prepare the data so the value only shows up in the corresponding series. Something like =if(value < 25%, value, 0). This way you get your chart to be conditionally formatted.
